Pendant très longtemps la relation entre le fleuve et les Toulousains tient plutôt de l’expression « je t’aime, moi non plus ». La Garonne prend sa source non loin, dans les Pyrénées, puis elle rejoint l’Ariège en amont. Ainsi, pendant des siècles, au printemps avec les pluies et la fonte des neiges, elle déferle sauvagement dans la ville plus qu’elle n’y entre...

C’est pourtant sa force qui permet à la Ville rose un développement important. Les habitants la craignent, c’est vrai, mais ils savent l’apprivoiser. Navigable, aujourd’hui la Garonne n’alimente plus de moulins à eaux mais bien des turbines électriques. Ainsi, de par son écosystème riche et sa noblesse, elle continue d’être adulée.

Les atours de Dame Garonne vont vous subjuguer. En passant par les rues témoins de l’héritage des métiers autour de l’eau (rue des Blanchers), la visite vous conduit le long de l’élégant quai Lombard aménagé à l’époque classique. Ensuite, le pont Neuf vous porte jusqu’au quartier Saint-Cyprien, où les pas résonnent sous les murs imposants des anciens hôpitaux. Quand le temps le permet, la promenade emprunte la passerelle suspendue au-dessus des eaux bouillonnantes de la chaussée du Bazacle.

Au fil de la Garonne

Le sud de la France au XIIe siècle est un territoire qui prospère grâce à ses nombreuses activités commerciales et bénéficie d’une certaine indépendance par rapport au nord de la France plus proche de son roi. On y parle une langue différente, la langue d’oc, célébrée d’un comté à un autre par les troubadours et les poètes.

Dans ce contexte, une nouvelle religion se répand, rejetant l’organisation de l’église catholique et proposant une interprétation différente des textes religieux. Devant l’essor du catharisme jugé comme hérétique par l’Église catholique, le pape fait appel au roi de France pour y mettre fin...

Origines et croyances, batailles, sièges et révoltes : évoquez la longue croisade contre les cathares, le tribunal de l’Inquisition et le rôle des familles nobles toulousaines dans cette période bien ancrée dans la mémoire collective.

Les cathares à Toulouse

Pendant très longtemps, le canal du Midi, éloigné des remparts, servait d’octroi c’est à dire de péage marchand pour entrer dans la ville. Pourtant, les faubourgs du XIXe siècle grignotent peu à peu ces limites établies. Le quartier Marengo se trouve alors entre les nouvelles lignes de chemin de fer et la colline de Jolimont, une campagne stratégique aux portes de la ville.

De nouveaux bâtiments vont donc se fondre dans un treillage urbain neuf, artificiel et original. Cette visite vous fait passer de la gare au style parisien à l’école Vétérinaire aujourd’hui remplacée par la Médiathèque. On y découvre que les institutions du progrès côtoient l’habitat ouvrier. Puis, de l’église Saint-Sylve riche des ornements de terre cuite de l’atelier Giscard, l’ascension se poursuit jusqu’à l’Observatoire de Jolimont. Ainsi, cette déambulation évoque l’émergence toulousaine de nouvelles sciences dans un quartier Marengo qui était comme un laboratoire urbain dans un écrin à l’ambiance populaire.

À l'aube, s'accorder un rendez-vous unique avec la ville encore endormie. Toulouse : l'essentiel

Le quartier huppé dit « des antiquaires » se développe à partir du XVIIe  siècle. Plus éloigné du quartier des marchands (rue Saint-Rome), il y coulaient des jours rustiques faits de potagers et de métiers plus humbles.

Avec l’avènement du Parlement en 1444, les maisons abritant le pouvoir royal devinrent le siège d’une des cours de justice les plus influentes du royaume. Les magistrats décidèrent de s’installer sur les parcelles modestes de ce quartier pour profiter de l’aura prestigieuse et spirituelle de la cité épiscopale. Au XVIIIe siècle la ville jouit d’une aura judiciaire incroyable, traitant des affaires criminelles qui ont participé à l’Histoire de France.

Cette partie de la ville attirait également la noblesse de robe grâce à ses nouveaux jardins d’agrément, ainsi qu’au prestige du canal du Midi tout proche.

Les hôtels particuliers, de style classique entre cours et jardins, rivalisent de beautés avec leurs ferronneries et la bichromie de pierre blanche et brique. Parfois, on peut même entrer dans une cour d’honneur pour admirer les mascarons et les lignes régulières de ces demeures d’exception.

Au coeur du quartier Saint-Étienne

Cette visite est une savante recette où l’équilibre de la complicité parents-enfants est primordial ! Prenez une famille, faites-en une équipe. Le circuit énigme

À sa création au Ier siècle, la ville de Tolosa possède une de ses entrées principales ici, au sud, tout près de la Garonne. À l’époque féodale et à l’émergence du comté de Toulouse, la porte du rempart est réaménagée pour face aux invasions. Elle se mue en un imposant château qui disparaitra à la Renaissance. 

C’est en effet à cette période que le royaume de France, ayant annexé le Comté deux siècles auparavant, va remplacer le château par des maisons somptueuses plus appropriées pour faire régner l’administration et la justice royale.

Cette visite vous permet en exclusivité de descendre arpenter les ruines de l’une des plus grandes découvertes archéologiques de la ville. 600 m2 de crypte ont été mis en lumière par les archéologues pendant presque dix ans. Vous découvrirez ensuite la Grand Chambre, la plus ancienne salle de procès (1490) où l’on rend, encore aujourd’hui, la justice républicaine.

Palais de justice ou la ville enfouie

Cette visite est une balade qui peut tourner à l’exploration si peu qu’une opportunité de dernière minute se dévoile ! Le centre-ville historique regorge de trésors cachés derrière les façades qui se sont ajoutées ou transformées au fil des siècles, métamorphosant ainsi les rues. La vie quotidienne permet parfois d’avoir accès à des lieux fabuleux ou insolites, juste sous votre nez.

La tentation pour le guide de jouer avec le mot « cour » pourrait aussi vous amener à hausser les sourcils et écarquiller les yeux. En plus de voir des cours intérieures, peut-être longerez-vous un passage au « long cours », ou bien vous retrouverez-vous sur les berges d’un cours d’eau... Toulouse secrète ou la ville méconnue

Voici une visite express pour se faufiler entre les fauteuils des meilleurs emplacements du théâtre. Quand les danseurs, musiciens et chanteurs soufflent entre deux représentations, le guide en profite pour vous emmener humer les effluves de maquillage, de velours et de bois, observer à distance les machinistes qui travaillent à hisser, porter, démonter les parties scéniques. Il n’est pas question de se rendre dans les coulisses pour des questions de sécurité, mais bel et bien de parcourir tous les étages !

L’entrée des artistes permet de se rendre compte de l’espace dédié à la circulation des acteurs de ce monde à part. Puis, après le hall d’accueil et les foyers, le guide vous fait accéder au paradis avant de redescendre au balcon et enfin au parterre. Chaque étape vous réserve son lot de surprises : des points de vue sublimes sur l’immense salle en fer à cheval, des rumeurs et des anecdotes pour saisir le potentiel créateur et producteur du célèbre Théâtre du Capitole de Toulouse. 

Lever de rideau au théâtre du Capitole

Ce bâtiment à la forme atypique est un point de repère incontournable dans la ville : ses façades de briques et de galets de Garonne sont indissociables de l’obélisque de la place Dupuy. Érigée à cheval entre les boulevards et le port Saint-Sauveur, la Halle aux grains inaugurée en 1861 était un trait d’union commerçant essentiel entre la ville et le canal du Midi. Avec le déclin de la navigation intérieure, pourtant, l’histoire de la halle ne faisait que commencer.

La ville n’a de cesse de reconvertir cet espace au fil des décennies. Sa structure de fer type Eiffel et ses greniers à blés rustiques voient passer des laborantins d’agronomie, des boxeurs transpirants, des clowns au nez rouge puis de gracieuses danseuses de ballets. Difficile à croire ? Pendant une heure, cette visite narre l’histoire fascinante de la halle mais permet aussi d’arpenter les couloirs d’une mini-ville souterraine bâtie dans les années 1970 quand Michel Plasson convainc la municipalité de faire de ce lieu un temple du spectacle.

Même si la Halle aux grains reste la résidence de l’Orchestre national du Capitole de Toulouse, cette salle accueille environ 140 spectacles par saison et les musiciens de l’Orchestre national la partagent avec des artistes parfois moins classiques, toujours talentueux.

À travers un parcours thématique et un ensemble de près de 150 œuvres, l’exposition aborde les questions de la représentation du paysan, des semences, de la fabrication du paysage ou encore des gestes et savoir-faire, et met en avant les artistes, historiques et émergents, qui placent au cœur de leur pratique la figure et le travail des paysans et paysannes.

Artistes et paysans, battre la campagne 

Toulouse s’est tant développée au 14ème siècle, qu’elle est devenue une des villes les plus peuplées et dynamiques du royaume, grâce notamment aux moulins à eaux sur la Garonne. Bâtie en grande partie de bois et de torchis, c’est en 1463 que la ville va essuyer l’incendie le plus dévastateur de son histoire : plus de sept mille maisons partent en fumée… et paradoxalement, c’est ici que « Toulouse à la Renaissance » commence ! 

Au cœur du quartier historique, vous suivez les traces qui marquent le destin fascinant de la ville qui renait de ses cendres tel un phœnix. À la fin du 15ème siècle, certains événements bousculent l’histoire de Toulouse : dans le sillage de l’université médiévale, le roi Charles VII décide d’implanter une cour de justice sous forme de Parlement, puis, la mode des étoffes bleues dans la noblesse, couleur du roi et de la Vierge, va fixer un savoir-faire unique au cœur du triangle de l’or bleu.

Dès lors, sculpteurs de génies, marchands, teinturiers ou magistrats profitent des destructions de l’incendie pour faire sortir de terre cette fameuse ville de brique rose et de pierre blanche avec de somptueux hôtels particuliers, des églises et même un nouveau pont !

Le guide vous conduit entre ces façades et portails tout en décryptant les détails qui vont défrayer la chronique de l’époque : découvertes de vestiges de la grande Tolosa antique, « coup de cœur » du roi François 1er pour la Belle Paule, surenchère de tours d’orgueil… finalement cette promenade auprès d’une dizaine de lieux vous permet d’admirer les évolutions architecturales et de comprendre le contexte économique qui a fait de Toulouse un foyer de rayonnement artistique reconnu !

Le quartier Saint-Sernin

Au moyen-âge, la notion de charité est le premier concept qui se rapproche de celui du soin des autres. Dès le XIIème siècle, nombres de structures, maisons-dieu ou maladreries se trouvent près de la sortie de la ville. L’Histoire ici, s’inscrit dans chaque escalier, chaque cour ou muraille pour comprendre comment les pèlerinages religieux, la peste et les évolutions médicales ont façonné ce quartier encore en partie voué aux secrets de la pudeur hospitalière. 

Si le sujet de cette visite parait un peu sombre, il est pourtant essentiel et pleins de surprises ! Il permet de mieux valoriser chaque détail d’architecture de ces monuments historiques de la rive gauche de la Garonne. Ainsi, on découvre qu’à l’hospice général, apprendre un métier aux orphelins pour leur garantir un avenir ou bien mettre en place les premières écoles d’infirmières, illustrent les paradoxes des XVIIème et XVIIIème siècle où charité, moralité et enfermement sont intimement liés. 

Un des temps forts de cette visite réside dans la découverte de la chapelle St Joseph à nouveau ouverte au public après plusieurs années de restauration. Si son dôme surplombant le fleuve est un des monuments les plus photographiés de la ville, peu connaissent son décor intérieur et ses secrets historiques…

Les hôpitaux à Toulouse

Strauss a 84 ans lorsqu’il compose ses Quatre derniers Lieder**, cycle sur des poèmes de Hermann Hesse et Joseph von Eichendorff** offrant une vision sereine et lucide de l’adieu à ce monde. La Symphonie n°9 de Bruckner, restée inachevée, est elle aussi un adieu grandiose.

Its events programme is based around different themes, retrospectives or festivals. 
All films are shown in their original versions, with French subtitles. 
It also offers cine-concerts, professional get-togethers, debates with guests, screenings for schools, conferences and exhibitions. In the summer it screens films in the courtyard, out in the open and beneath the stars.

la Cinematheque de Toulouse

No water, but lots of photos! This water tower has been renovated as an art gallery to the great delight of photography buffs.

The place is unusual, to say the least. Set on the banks of the Garonne river, this 19th Century water tower made of brick was used to supply 90 fountains in its day and you can still see the old hydraulic machinery (the water wheel is impressive!). 
Since 1974, it is used as an art gallery by the Toulousian photographer Jean Dieuzaide. More than 400 artists have exhibited there, including Doisneau, who was the subject of the very first exhibition in the water tower. 
 
Each year, around ten exhibitions take place within the framework of a programme balanced between the great names of photography and young talents, supporting the international reputation of the place.

During the « Airbus Kids » tour, the mysteries of aviation are explained to 6/12 year olds by answering questions such as: "Do you know how a plane flies? Children can discover that an Airbus assembly line is like a giant international jigsaw puzzle. They can also experience what it’s like to step aboard the A400M.

let's Visit Airbus

In these slaughterhouses that were converted into a museum of modern and contemporary art, there haven't been animals for many years... although we are greeted by a strange bird!

This unusual location puts its 3,000 m2 at the service of the 4,000 works of art in its permanent collection and the major exhibitions that it regularly hosts and for which it is famous (Franz Gertsch, Dado, Daniel Spoerri, Roland Topor, etc.). The very spacious halls allow for pleasant circulation, even in the most crowded conditions. 
All the great names of modern and contemporary art can be found there: Fontana, Riopelle, Chaissac, Hartung... 
 
Outside, 16 monumental works of art make up an original and colourful route that starts in front of the museum entrance with Fernand Léger's Les Femmes au Parroquet (Women with Parrots). 
The place, witness of a living culture, hosts concerts, performances and screenings.

For more than 40 years, the association Ailes Anciennes Toulouse has been saving and restoring a unique collection of aircraft (planes, helicopters, gliders and engines) that it presents with passion to the public. 
The collection, which is among the most important in France, has been collected and is maintained by a team of volunteers. 
 
On their grounds in Blagnac, we can discover about fifty legendary aircraft outdoors, engines and light aircraft under shelter, as well as the restoration hangar where they bring the old aircrafts back to life before the eyes of visitors. 
 
An essential visit for aviation, mechanics and DIY enthusiasts! 
 
The association is the main contributor to the Aeroscopia Museum, which opened in early 2015. The visit includes a tour of about fifty aircrafts outside, a storage hangar with engines and light aircrafts and recently the restoration hangar where volunteers are busy bringing old planes back to life.

Ailes Anciennes Toulouse

A veritable goldmine for lovers of Toulouse, this museum invites you on a journey into the city’s past through a multitude of objects gathered by the Toulousains de Toulouse Association since 1907.

The Musée du Vieux-Toulouse presents objects evoking the history of the city from Antiquity to the 20th century in the Hôtel Dumay, a magnificent Renaissance building. 
 
The exhibition rooms have been arranged as small, cosy 18th century salons giving the place an old-fashioned charm. Each one deals with a particular theme: the evolution of the city, old institutions, local artists, disappeared monuments, customs... 
 
We immerse ourselves in the daily life of the Toulouse inhabitants of the past in a very concrete way thanks to the presentation of costumes, crockery and other everyday objects. 
 
The members of the association know how to brighten up the visit with small anecdotes, which they gladly share.

Musee du Vieux Toulouse

It is time for the grand reopening! After three years of renovation, the time has come to open the doors of the refurbished precious arts museum of Paul-Dupuy and to discover its new curious and precious museography. 

Located in the historical area of the Carmes, Paul-Dupuy is the decorative and graphical arts museum of the city of Toulouse. 
 
When the museum was founded in the beginning of the 20th century, it was established in an old mansion of a parliamentarian from Toulouse. Back then, it was a private institution that was home to a rich collection belonging to an amateur of art named Paul Dupuy (1867-1944). These collections included some art objects, paintings, sculptures, furniture, ethnographic objects, sketches, prints etc. Bequeathed to the city, it opened to the public in the 14th of July 1949. 
 
After 3 years of renovation, the museum reopened to the public in the 16th of November 2022 with a renewed museography and some enriched collection. You can now discover the pre-cinema and cinema collection in the screening study, one of the most beautiful collection of horology in the time study, and finally, the decorative arts collection in the precious study.

Paul-dupuy Museum

Here, no fear to have, the gods and heroes protect us in a time travel that takes us back to the ancient Tolosa.

At the Saint-Raymond Museum, the Archaeology Museum of Toulouse, you enter a place that will not leave you indifferent. On the 2nd floor, the objects presented and the models remind you of Toulouse and its region at the time of the Gauls and the Romans. 
 
 On the 1st floor, you will never know if it is you who are looking at the portraits in the gallery or if it is the emperors who are staring at you. Then come the mythological sculptures with these astonishing carved reliefs representing the Works of Hercules. Go underground to discover a real archaeological site: an ancient cemetery in which an astonishing vestige, a lime kiln, has been preserved. Finish with the sarcophagi and their decoration. 
 
For a moment out of time, drink a coffee in the small exotic garden with its unusual and unknown charm (seasonal opening).

Saint-Raymond Museum,  Toulouse Archaeology Museum

Exceptional evidence of Southern Gothic architecture, this brickwork giant houses the relics of St Thomas Aquinas in the shade of its giant palm tree.

The Jacobins Convent is a jewel of medieval art. A gigantic building that is both sober and original, it is home to a church that is unique in its genre. With an austere exterior, it astonishes visitors once inside with its luminosity, the lightness of its vaults and its double nave that ends with a spectacular stone palm tree with 22 leaf veins. 
 
Beneath its altar are the relics of the Dominican friar Thomas Aquinas. Its walls are entirely painted with trompe l’œil that imitates marble, considered more noble than brick. 
 
The cloister, the former refectory, the chapel of the Virgin and the chapel of Saint-Antonin are cool and tranquil stop-offs that also host concerts and exhibitions.

Jacobin Convent

Aeroscopia Aeronautical Museum

Carried by Jean-Jacques Germain, in association with Sandrine Banessy, Terre de Pastel is Pastel's major resource center. 1500 m² dedicated to pastel (woad): a place of exception and innovation. Terre de Pastel reveals all the secrets of pastel, the legendary plant at the origin of the fortune of the land of Cocagne. At your disposal: the museum for a new experience and demonstrations of dyeing or workshops; the spa in natural light and its innovative cosmetics Bleu de Toulouse and Bleu par Nature.

The Woad Museum 

Ride through the Ville Rose in a panoramic open-top bus and admire the major historical sites and monuments. The tour includes an audio guide and lasts 1h10. 

The City Tour route takes you through the Ville Rose's most famous and emblematic spots. From the Garden Quarter to Saint-Sernin Basilica, via the Canal du Midi and Saint-Etienne Cathedral, this itinerary gives you a general overview of Toulouse's historic heart. 
 
With the City Tour, you have the option of getting off and on the bus at any of the 12 stops along the route. This allows you to stroll around the city and get back on the bus throughout the day.

From March to June, you can take a cruise on the Canal du Midi. Built under the reign of Louis XIV, it is one of the oldest canals in Europe still in use. Discover the history of this astonishing and majestic canal and that of its designer, Pierre Paul Riquet. Two cruises are available on the Canal du Midi: the "3 Écluses" cruise (duration 1h15), which takes you through the 3 locks in the town centre, or the "Riquet" cruise (duration 1h30), which takes you out of the town centre to Ramonville, in a more bucolic and leafy setting. 
 
From July to October, cruises are organised on the Garonne and the Canal de Brienne. This canal was once used to transport timber, Pyrenean marble and woad. With a breathtaking view of the Dôme de la Grave and the Pont Neuf, you can cruise this river rich in history. Three cruises are available on the Garonne: a cruise on the Garonne and the Canal de Brienne with a passage through the Saint-Pierre lock (duration: 60 minutes), a cruise on the Garonne alone (30 minutes) and finally a night cruise on the Garonne (duration: 40 minutes).

- For the "3 Écluses" cruise: 
At 10.30 am departure from the port of Saint-Sauveur and arrival at the port of l'Embouchure. At 2.30 pm departure from the Port de l'Embouchure and arrival at the Port Saint Sauveur.

les Bateaux Toulousains

Situated on the historic runway used for take-off by the pioneers of the “Aéropostale” airmail service, now known as the “Piste des Géants” (Giants’ Runway), la Halle de La Machine invites you to discover the collection of street theatre machines designed and made by François Delaroziere and La Machine company. 
 
Every day, the “Véritables-Machinistes” (True Stagehands) bring you tales and legends of these mysterious inhabitants made of wood and steel in a constantly renewed setting. Outside, the Minotaur and the Spider take you on board for journeys on their backs. 
 
This is a real immersion in the La Machine company world at the heart of a historic district of Toulouse. 
 
Along with the visit, the Halle de La Machine also offers refreshments in the “Minotaure Café”, a shop and bookshop and areas set aside for contact with the public.

On the Runway of Giants, established on a historic site, discover the Flight of the Pioneers and plunge into the greatest adventure in the history of aeronautics and Toulouse: Aéropostale.

At a time when no aircraft was capable of doing so, a group of men set themselves the challenge of crossing a desert, an ocean and the second highest mountain range in the world, all in order to deliver the mail more quickly. To do this, they had to open "La Ligne" by overcoming considerable human and technical challenges. 
 
A human adventure, where collaboration, mutual aid, perseverance, organisation and fraternity were the essential attributes required to take part. Among these pioneers, we will always remember the men who have gone down in history: Latécoère, Bouilloux-Lafont, Daurat, Saint-Exupéry, Mermoz, Guillaumet and their comrades. It is thanks to these men that the first plane ever built in Toulouse, a Salmson 2A2, was designed and took off from the runway across from the museum. 
 
During the inter-war period, before being transported by a La Ligne plane, the mail was taken by night between Paris and Toulouse by train in postal wagons. The sorting was done during the journey by postmen called "ambulants". Relive their journey and their working conditions by exploring a genuine postal wagon of the period: an immersive experience for a real return to 1930!

l'envol des Pionniers

Built at the heart of Saint-Michel area, the prison of St Michel is keeping watch over Toulouse for more than a century and half. An exceptional and monumental work dream up by the architect Jacques-Jean ESQUIE at the end of the 19th century, the edifice, which is part of Toulouse heritage.

If the St Michel prison is still close to the public, the Castelet has reopened its doors. Listed as a Historical Monument in 2011, that administrative aisle of the prison has become now an interpretation center. The themes covered are as much diverse as the story of the prison is vast: from professional professions to great destinies, through its architecture and into the daily life of the prison environment and the Résistance in Toulouse; all of those can be find at the heart of the most iconic building of the pink city. 
 
A rich and diverse schedule awaits the public. They will find all the opportunity to experience the remarkable fate of this site again.

This guided tour is suitable for all those who wish to explore the city centre from the water and take advantage of historical commentaries on Toulouse's heritage. The route takes in the Quai de Tounis, Saint-Michel lock, the Prairie des Filtres, the Pont Neuf, the Hôtel Dieu and La Daurade. 
 
Stand Up Paddle : 
After a 15 minute briefing, you will be on the Garonne River for 45 minutes and will enjoy a round trip on the water in complete autonomy. This sport is complete, it uses all the muscles of your body, but above all it is a fun way to improve your balance. A real breath of fresh air that allows you to feel calm and in harmony with your surroundings. 
 
Good to know : 
- This activity is available from the end of June to October. 
- The departure point is at the Port Viguerie, in the historic centre of Toulouse (left bank, next to the Hôtel-Dieu Saint-Jacques). 
- Canoes are 2-seaters in which you won't get wet. 
- Equipment is supplied. You must be able to swim. 
- Granhòta instructors are there to supervise you (equipment, briefing, launching, supervision). 
- Children must be at least 6 years old and accompanied by an adult.

This museum that brings together works from the Renaissance and Impressionist masterpieces can be found in the most beautiful mansion house of the city, the Hotel d'Assézat: a feast for the eyes.

This foundation housed in the Hôtel d’Assézat and created by Argentinian collector Georges Bemberg brings together numerous works of western art from the Renaissance to the early 20thCentury. 
In the Renaissance-style salons, the first floor brings back to life the interiors of different eras by combining period furniture, tableaux and objet d’art. 
 
The 2nd floor is dedicated to modern paintings and it is important not to miss the 35 tableaux by post-impressionist Bonnard. 
 
Among the artists on display we find Guardi, Cranach the Elder, Veronese, Titian, Fantin-Latour…

Boudoir Bleu Par Nature - Terre de Pastel

This is the most photographed building in Toulouse! Its dome acts as a beacon for the city’s inhabitants, drawing the gaze by day and when it is dressed in lights at night.

The marker of the Saint-Cyprien quarter, La Grave chapel was built around the XVIII Century on a gravel bank left by the River Garonne, which gives it its name. 
 
It was part of the La Grave Hospital, built in 1197 in order to accommodate plague victims. Its consecration to St Joseph, patron saint of carpenters, places the accent on the role it played during the XVII Century at the time of the Great Imprisonment of the poor. It then included numerous workshops designed to train the needy in the skills required to earn a placement with local artisans.
