Chartreuse, Villeneuve lez Avignon

Founded by Pope Innocent VI in 1356, La Chartreuse is one of the largest and most remarkable monasteries of the Carthusian order. It comprises a church, three cloisters and forty cells, each with its garden and the chapel of frescoes, painted by Matteo Giovannetti who also painted the frescoes in the Palais des Popes. The Chartreuse is today one of the largest artists-in-residence venues in France.
