Free entrance - The Saint Pierre and Paul Abbey

Count Rudolf of Altenbourg founded an Abbey on his estate at Ottmarsheim which was destined for the Benedictines and consecrated in 1049 by the Alsatian Pope Leo IX. much has been written about this edifice and many studies were dedicated to it during the Renaissance period because of the octagonal shape, like a pagan temple, inspired directly from the Palatine Chapel of Aix-la-Chapelle. Many authors were nonplussed by the Abbey and some even thought that it was a temple to the god Mars. A number of fires have marked the history of the Abbey Church, the first being in 1272. Restoration work has revealed the magnificent frescoes of the 11th and 15th centuries. However, a serious fire in 1991 caused considerable damage. It was only in 1999 that the building once more revealed its splendour following extensive work. Ottmarsheim Abbey Church is classified as a historical monument and forms part of the Romanesque Route. Guided tours are organised all year round in French and German.

Located close to both the German and Swiss borders, La Filature Sc&egrave;ne nationale - Mulhouse is a cultural venue quite unique in its genre. Built in 1993 by Claude Vasconi on the site of a former cotton factory, it also houses the Orchestre Symphonique de Mulhouse and also hosts the Op&eacute;ra national du Rhin. La Filature consists of: a Grande Salle with 1 216 seats, a Salle Modulable which can seat up to 360 spectators, rehearsal studios and a photography exhibition space which is in constant use. There is also a Mediatheque run by the city of Mulhouse, specialised in the performing arts.

Free entrance - Historic Museum

Founded in 1864, the Historical Museum is housed in the former townhall. It now features three topics: local archaeology, the history of Mulhouse and Sundgauvian folk art. The collections presenting the history of Mulhouse are fittingly exhibited in the parts of the townhall in which the original decors have been preserved. Middle-class interiors from different periods have been re-created thanks to an extensive collection of costumes and furniture. The folk art gallery presents the reconstitution of a Sundgauvian bedroom and kitchen together with several hand-crafted objects and sculptures. The Museum also boasts a fine collection of toys.

Founded in 1866 by the Industrial Society of Mulhouse, operated by the City since 1958, the Mus&eacute;e des Beaux-Arts (Museum of Fine Arts) has undergone recent renovation. Dedicated almost exclusively to European painting, the collections span several centuries, from the late Middle Ages to the 20th century. The 19th century is especially well represented with G&eacute;ricault, Isabey, Jongkind, Bouguereau and the most important collection, outside Paris, of works by Henner, together with an interesting selection of academic, Orientalist and folk paintings. The 20th century features a fine series of paintings by L&eacute;on Lehmann. Temporary exhibitions are regularly organized.
