The museum's origins lie with Fritz Schlumpf, a wealthy Swiss industrialist with a passion for French and European automobiles. His fortune allowed him to acquire, starting in the 1960s, over 500 models, which he stored in one of his disused spinning mills in Mulhouse. Reserved for a very select circle of privileged individuals, this unique collection remained largely unknown to the general public for many years.
In 1977, the Schlumpf brothers' industrial empire collapsed. The employees decided to occupy the abandoned factory and discovered its treasures. They then opened the museum to the public for two years. At the initiative of Jean Panhard, an association was formed in 1981 to save the collection, and the museum reopened in 1982.
