After training at the renowned Düsseldorf Art Academy in Germany, Constantin Nitsche became assistant to the great painter Peter Doig. He eventually settled in Marseille, where he lives and works and is considered one of the leading figures in a new wave of figurative painting.
In Avignon, he is presenting a series of 30 paintings created especially for the occasion.

The American-Portuguese artist and filmmaker has been invited to the Lambert Collection for his first major exhibition in France. He presents the full richness of his work, which combines video installations, films, and paintings, where new technologies meet poetry with power and elegance.

In the seasonal exhibition hall, this fall's display is dedicated to Maria Bárbola, a dwarf in the court of Philip IV, one of the characters in Diego Velázquez's painting Las Meninas. The oil on canvas on display (1539X1085) belongs to the former Angladon-Dubrujeaud collection. It is a 19th-century copy based on Velázquez (Seville 1599-Madrid 1660).

The word “menino,” of Portuguese origin, referred in Spain to a young page, usually from a noble family, who entered the service of the king, princes, and great lords to perform simple tasks in palatine ceremonies. The “meninas” were ladies-in-waiting to the princesses and the queen. The presence of dwarfs among the servants was very common during the reign of Philip IV. Richly dressed, they often became their masters' confidants, and sometimes their accomplices, which allowed them to obtain quite exceptional favors and enjoy great familiarity with the ladies and lords of the court.

Angladon Museum, Avignon 

Here you can discover the exceptional collection of 17th- and 18th-century decorative arts that Louis Vouland (1883-1973), a food industry industrialist, built up over some fifty years for this house where he settled in 1927. Furniture, earthenware, porcelain, tapestries, clocks, chandeliers, mirrors and Chinese objects create the intimate atmosphere of this timeless house museum, where the magic of the 18th-century spirit is at work.

Museum Louis Vouland, Avignon  

Founded by Pope Innocent VI in 1356, it is one of the largest and most remarkable monasteries of the Carthusian order, with a church, three cloisters and forty cells, its gardens and the fresco chapel of the famous painter of the Papal Palace, Matteo Giovannetti. Today, La Chartreuse is also a major artists' residence....

The Chartreuse, Villeneuve lez Avignon  

On Mont Andaon, Fort Saint André was commissioned by Philippe IV le Bel and built under Jean II le Bon in the 14th century. This immense 750-meter-long fortification, built to protect the Abbey of Saint André and the town, enabled the King of France to assert his power in the region.

From Avignon, on the other side of the Rh&ocirc;ne and from even farther away, you can clearly see the fort standing proudly. But it is only once you are there&nbsp; that you can fully appreciate&nbsp; the strategic position&nbsp;of this fort dominating the Rh&ocirc;ne valley. From the top of its parapet walk, you can observe the Popes &#39;s Palace across the way, the Philippe IV le Bel tower, the saint Andr&eacute; abbey encompassed within the fort&#39;s defensive&nbsp; walls,&nbsp;the chartreuse&#39;s monastery in the village below and the entire surroundings countryside.&nbsp;

Museum of Pierre-de-Luxembourg, Villeneuve lez Avignon 

The monumental residence of the 14th-century pontiffs, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the largest Gothic palace in the world (15,000 m2 of floor space, equivalent to the volume of 4 Gothic cathedrals).

The visitor can see over 20 rooms, scenes of historic events, in particular the pope&rsquo;s private chambers and the frescoes painted by the Italian artist Matteo Giovannetti. The Popes&rsquo; Palace also offers the visitor continuous cultural activities throughout the year.

The ticket includes the visit of the Palace of the Popes as well as the histopad which is a touch pad that allows to live&nbsp;&nbsp;a temporal immersion in the major parts of the monument, entirely re-constituted as they could be in the 14th century.

The Maison Jean Vilar is a place for remembering, transmitting and inventing the work of Jean Vilar and popular theater.
Jean Vilar passed away in 1971. It immediately seemed necessary to collect documents relating to his work, those of the Théâtre National Populaire when he was its director (1951-63), and those of the Avignon Festival as a whole, which he created in 1947.
On the initiative of Paul Puaux, his closest collaborator and successor as director of the Festival d'Avignon (1971-79), the Association Jean Vilar was founded in 1972.
A joint effort by the Association, the Bibliothèque nationale de France and the City of Avignon led to the certainty of the importance of a house dedicated to Jean Vilar and to reflection on today's world of the performing arts.
In 1979, with the city's acquisition of the Hôtel de Crochans, the Maison Jean Vilar became a place for exhibitions, archives and research, as well as a venue for meetings and events in keeping with the spirit of popular theater today. This project is part of a quadripartite agreement between the City of Avignon, the French Ministry of Culture, the Bibliothèque nationale de France and the Association Jean Vilar.
