At the gates of Nantes and the ocean, on the threshold of BrittanyThis is the very first castle to have been built in the Loire Valley (late 15th c.). It is now home to the official museum of local biscuit makers, LU.Goulaine is a fort dating from the Middle Ages and following the affiliation of Brittany and France, was reconstructed with ‘tuffeau’ rock in “Renaissance” style. While building work was finished in the 17th century, the principal floor dates back to the 15th century and the Renaissance and the oldest parts date back to the Middle Ages. Built from chalk stone (Tufa stone), “Goulaine” lives on as an example of the opulence that once reigned in this “Valley of the Kings”.
