

The Musée d’arts de Nantes welcomes Nantes-born artist Pierrick Sorin to its patio.

He will present a solo exhibition featuring his multifaceted work: self-filmed sequences, video installations, optical installations, etc. Whether his works are presenting very ordinary everyday reality or mischievously playing with visual illusions, they are full of humour, but always underpinned by questions and uncertainty about art and life.

Le Chronographe travels the history of the antique city of Ratiatum, discovered in the basement of Rezé and explored by the archaeologists since the 80s.
It is implanted at the heart of the archeological site of Saint-Lupien to Rezé and overhangs the chapel Saint-Lupien, as well as the vestiges of the old Gallo-Roman harbour district. Thanks to the digital, playful and interactive tools proposed in the permanent exhibition, the visitor experiments the methods of the archaeology and goes off to explore the history of Ratiatum. Center of metropolitan archaeological interpretation, Le Chronographe is at the heart of the archaeological current events of the metropolis and proposes a set of conferences, animations and temporary exhibitions(exposures).

After 6 years of closure, the Musée d'arts de Nantes re-opens in june 2017 with 2,000 m2 of additional exhibition space, restored facades, a restaurant and a bookshop all designed by the London’s architecture firm Stanton Williams.

A major work of Bill Viola, belonging to the permanent collections. Internationally renowned artist in the field of video, he created Nantes Triptych which consists of 3 video screens.

A work by Dominique Blais. For the first intervention in the showcase of the museum, the artist proposes a device inspired by the gyroscope: &quot;a sculpture in movement, an unusual object, which feeds on light or its absence to make appear or disappear the color&quot;.

Rising like a belvedere above the Butte is a grand building, which since 1978, has been dedicated to the works of the great author. The multi-media trail brings Jules Verne’s entire work in all its splendour and diversity to a wider public.

The museum represents an important scientific heritage, and the sheer number of its specimens places it among the top few in France. Its collections cover all the areas of natural history: zoological collections, regional wildlife, mineralogy and also has a reptile house containing regional and exotic reptiles. It also houses temporary exhibitions.

At the gates of Nantes and the ocean, on the threshold of Brittany

This is the very first castle to have been built in the Loire Valley (late 15th c.). It is now home to the official museum of local biscuit makers, LU.

Goulaine is a fort dating from the Middle Ages and following the affiliation of Brittany and France, was reconstructed with ‘tuffeau’ rock in “Renaissance” style. While building work was finished in the 17th century, the principal floor dates back to the 15th century and the Renaissance and the oldest parts date back to the Middle Ages. Built from chalk stone (Tufa stone), “Goulaine” lives on as an example of the opulence that once reigned in this “Valley of the Kings”. A war ship, now a floating naval museum
Unique warship which is now classed a historic monument

Historical monument since 1991, the Maillé-Brezé is the first naval museum afloat in France. It participates in the enhancement of a heritage that might otherwise be forgotten.

Jewel of the French Navy, the Maillé-Brézé is one of a series of 18 destroyer escort, Surcouf type, built in the 1950'. 

 With a length of 132.65 meters, a width of 12.70 meters and a draft of 5.80 meters, its moving at full load is 3 900 tons. Served by a crew of 277 men including 17 officers and 100 petty officers, its 63 000 horsepower allowed it to reach the speed of 33 knots with an action range of 4 100 nautical (or 6 600 km)

At the frontier of the former Duchy of Brittany

The romantic ruins of the Clisson castle are standing in the heart of the town.

Built by the powerful Clisson family in the twelfth century, the castle played a strategic role in protecting the frontiers of the Duchy of Brittany in the fifteenth century. It was burned down during the Vendéen Wars. Today, the site offers numerous examples of defensive architecture: arrow slits, cannon ports, traps, etc.

Rehabilitated paper mill

A restored former papermaker and flour mill, now hosts a living paper museum in an idyllic setting.

A genuine 360° theatre, nearly 25m high and 22m in diameter has been implanted on the banks of the Loire. Its 3-tier concrete lace design under a big top is decorated with pediments and guarded by 16 fishermen from every ocean in the world. You climb onto an incredible sculpture where you are spectator to strange and worrying sea creatures in a colossal 3-tiered cake. Witness the sea every which way, from the depths of the bottom, through the abysses, right up to the surface of the sea.

A team of mad builders have set up their workshop in this warehouse : a performance area where each individual machine puts on a mini-show.

Jules Verne himself would have imagined a 12m high elephant going for a stroll along his hometown’s quaysides! Board this strange beast and see all the machines in the hangars of the former shipyards. An imposing 8m heron carries passengers and flies over the model of the Heron Tree planted in the middle. Vegetation rubs up against mechanical plants and animals from the tree top canopy. You could be invited to take control of animals and admire the flight of the heron flying above the model of the Heron Tree. Sketches of the machine in use as well as covering the whole creative design process are on display in this Gallery-Laboratory. Since 2014 the Giant Ant has been scurrying across the gallery. The four passengers it carries can control its legs, head and mandibles.

In his photo project, AAM AASTHA, Charles Fr&eacute;ger continues to research masquerade rituals around the world. 
Fr&eacute;ger began a series of trips to India in 2019.He began his research in Southern India, exploring often spectacular incarnations of deities.These mostly Hindu sacred dances and theatrical performances are practiced in temples, theatres, and street festivals. 
This exhibition offer a sneak preview of nearly 90 of his unpublished photos.</h4>

<h4 class="CMN2020_BIG_TITLE">India, Reflections of Sacred Worlds 
Created in collaboration with the Museo delle Civilt&agrave; in Rome, this exhibition features nearly 200 original objects from the renowned Italian museum spanning over 1,300 years of Indian art. 
This exhibition explores the giant subcontinent&rsquo;s three native religions, featuring the gracious and powerful dance of stone sculptures representing Indian gods and goddesses, the serene artistic expressions of the Buddha and Jaina Tirthankaras, delicately rendered miniatures and colourful paintings, along with jewelry and folk art depicting the myths and legends of Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism.</h4>

IVRESSE DE L&#39;ENCRE - Lassa&acirc;d Metoui

From July 06th, to September 22th, 2024 
Trained in calligraphy from a very young age, Lassa&acirc;d Metoui takes as much inspiration from Western painting (Matisse, Paul Klee, Soulages&hellip;) as he does from Asian art &ndash; and Japanese, in particular. Over the years, his work has moved towards a modernity that transcends different cultures. And his innovative talent, which is rooted in a tradition of high aesthetic and moral standards, has made him a major artist in his field.

This exhibition will feature roughly one hundred previously unpublished works on canvas and paper, all of which were created for this show.

In it, Metoui explores new forms and materials. Rounded contours are one of the main themes of the exhibition, which he expresses using certain media (tondi &ndash; i.e., circular paintings) or materials (mirrors).

Japan figures prominently in Ivresse de l&rsquo;encre (&ldquo;Intoxicated by Ink&rdquo;). Inspired by the writings of Japanese philosopher Kitarō Nishida, Metoui&rsquo;s ink compositions on kozo paper display figurative motifs reminiscent of great masters, like Hokusai (1760-1849) and Hiroshige (1797-1858).

This new direction in his work offers an opportunity for Lassa&acirc;d Metoui to develop his &ldquo;plant alphabet&rdquo; project, which he began in his book Les Sept M&eacute;ditations sur le parfum, published in 2017.

Wide panorama of the history of art from the 13th to the 21st century in a new setting marrying the architecture of yesterday and today

After 6 years of closure, the Mus&eacute;e d&#39;arts de Nantes re-opens in june 2017 with 2,000 m2 of additional&nbsp;exhibition space, restored facades, a restaurant and a bookshop all designed by the London&rsquo;s&nbsp;architecture firm Stanton Williams. The museum&#39;s collection of over 12,000 pieces stretches from primitive to modern art and covers every type of art creation. Artists include Georges de La Tour, Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, Max Ernst, Sonia Delaunay, Gaston Chaissac, Pablo Picasso, Fernand L&eacute;ger, Vassily Kandinsky, Raymond Hains, Claude Cahun, Giuseppe Penone and Nan Goldin to name just a few.&nbsp;

The museum represents an important scientific heritage, and the sheer number of its specimens places it among the top few in France. Built in 1909, the LU Tower was an advertising totem erected to the glory of the LU biscuit brand. The celebrated biscuit box is 38 metres high and sits above an allegorical sculpture of Pheme and six signs of the Zodiac. Orphan to her twin tower, lost in 1974, the LU tower was 
restored to its exact original when the factory was reconverted into a national arts venue.

Like a holiday resort for locals, and a remarkably social and ephemeral space for visitors, La Cantine du Voyage has been an essential stop for on anyone on a &ldquo;Voyage to Nantes&rdquo; since 2013.

Housed within a structure (that can also be dismantled) using architectural elements from greenhouses, it has been set up along the edge of the Loire, by Daniel Buren and Patrick Bouchain&rsquo;s Les Anneaux, on the &Icirc;le de Nantes.

Long, wooden tables designed by Wudthing are laid out for an immense banquet. The fundamentals are still there, of course: the long bar, the restaurant (which can seat 300 people), the book/gift shop,&nbsp;the famed &ldquo;Potager&rdquo;&nbsp;vegetable garden by Nantes&rsquo; own market gardener Olivier Durand, as well as a recreational area complete with table soccer, and its own p&eacute;tanque terrain.&nbsp;

With its round and generous forms, <a href="https://www.levoyageanantes.fr/etapes/la-colline/" style="color:blue; text-decoration:underline">La Colline</a>&nbsp;by Nantes-based collective Appelle-moi Papa &ndash;&nbsp;which was made a permanent fixture of La Cantine in 2018 &ndash; is a whimsical, technicolor land where you can climb, roll around, slide, play, lay down... all to your heart&rsquo;s content!

These former pasturing fields &ndash; now converted into a park with walking areas and playgrounds&nbsp;&ndash; have retained their original beauty, from the changing skies &ndash; typical of their geographical position at the estuary gates &ndash; to the quiet intimacy of the Loire riverbanks.

Until the mid-1950s, a former stable was home to a team of horses. Today, this same stable still overlooks the grounds, with its open terrace and panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.

Château de Goulaine

Goulaine is a fort dating from the Middle Ages and following the affiliation of Brittany and France, was reconstructed with &lsquo;tuffeau&rsquo; rock in &ldquo;Renaissance&rdquo; style.&nbsp;While building work was finished in the 17th century, the principal floor dates back to the 15th century and the Renaissance and the oldest parts date back to the Middle Ages. Built from chalk stone (Tufa stone), &ldquo;Goulaine&rdquo; lives on as an example of the opulence that once reigned in this &ldquo;Valley of the Kings&rdquo;.&nbsp;Guided tour of the Stately Home.

In the small port of Cordemais, 30 minutes from Nantes and the beaches of La Baule, push open the doors of the Terre d&#39;estuaire Centre: with its balloon that rises to 25m and its fun and interactive environments, plunge into the secrets of the Loire estuary!&nbsp;

Admire the richness of the landscapes, travel through history, do scientific experiments... 3 hours of visit to discover, with your family, the estuary from every angle! From room to room, we explore all the facets of this remarkable setting. Above and below, from the visible to the invisible, in the sky or underwater, indoors or outdoors, we look up, listen and discover this crossroads of fresh and salt water, this 60 kilometre long ribbon that has so many stories to tell.

Over an area of almost 2000m2, there is a permanent tour, a temporary exhibition, activities for young and old, not forgetting the balloon which offers an exceptional view of the Loire estuary.

The balloon ride is included in the entrance fee. In case of strong winds and bad weather, the balloon is not accessible. 
Animals are not allowed.
